Spring Gardening Workshop - February 2018

Now's the Time to Start Planning! by R. Lieber

January has brought bitter cold and February is off to a gloomy start, but it is never too soon to begin planning for warm sunshine and a great garden this year.  Blount County Master Gardeners have announced their first workshop of the year, just in time to help with garden planning for 2018.

Attendees will learn about how to prepare now to create a new garden or renovate an old one.  Among the topics that will be demonstrated are proper site selection for a garden, and understanding how the amount of sun can determine what can be planted.  Soils testing collection techniques will be demonstrated and test result interpretation will be discussed. Soil test kits will also be available.

Planting basics such as soil preparation, mulch and fertilizer use will also be shown.  If those numbers on the fertilizer bag have you puzzled, that will be covered, too.  For those who dread the trips to the garden with a watering can or hose, advice on garden irrigation will be presented.

For many, plant label reading and seed packets descriptions leave them confused. If you want to understand either of these a little better, the Master Gardeners will have examples of both to help you understand all the important information they contain so you can buy seeds and plants with confidence.

On hand will be the popular REAP kits which contain seeds with a 3 season planting guide for a small vegetable garden.  Also on hand will be the second in a series of books produced by BCMG that explore growing plants that thrive in Blount County.  This new book is called Right Now! Attracting Pollinators to East Tennessee Gardens and is a wonderful resource for saving honeybees, butterflies and other pollinators while growing strong plants that are also mostly native to our region.  Donations received for REAP kits and books help fund more classes and workshops just like this one.

The 2018 Spring Workshops will be held at the First Baptist Church at 202 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy, Maryville, on Saturday February 17th starting at 10 AM with a repeat session the following week on Saturday February 24th starting at 2 PM.

To help them provide adequate materials and space the Blount County Master Gardeners request you RSVP your date of attendance via email at bcmga4classes@gmail.com.   For those who do not have computer access, please leave your name and the date you plan on attending on the Master Gardener hotline at 865-518-2520 .
