Become a Master Gardener!

All volunteers are trained with 40 hours of horticultural classes and return 40 hours of volunteer service in Blount County.

A Tennessee Extension Master Gardener horticultural textbook is provided as part of the class fee charged to attendees of these classes.

The classes are taught by professors and other industry professionals who share their knowledge and experience.

To obtain the Extension Master Gardeners Certificate:  40 hours of volunteer service in addition to attending the classes is required. Once the certificate has been achieved (the second year of service), the volunteer hours drop to 25 hours a year.

You can submit an application any time between now and January 2018.  Class size is limited to the first 30 applicants. Upon receipt of your form, the Class Coordinator will contact you with further details.

The fee for the General Training Class is $175 and covers the textbook, all materials, and speaker handouts.  This fee is due in January 2018 prior to the first class date.

Graduates of the 2016 Master Gardener Training Course

The warm early spring weather was a perfect way to bring the 2016 MG General Training Course to a close.  On Wednesday, April 6th, there were twenty five eager and avid gardeners who completed the 12 week course and received their “graduation” certificates.  There was a great array of food - everyone brought a dish to pass and John Wilson, director of UT Extension Blount County, presided over the ceremonies.  On hand was BCMG President Laurie Smalley who congratulated the interns and urged them to become active and contributing members of the association.

The General Training Course is held annually and this is the second year the classes were held in the evenings.  James Hutchison serves as the Education Coordinator and thanked his committee members Mike Peterson, David Burchfield, and Evelyn Weisskopf.  The interns now embark on obtaining their certification status by completing 40 hours of volunteer service.  Congratulations to all and welcome to the BCMG family!
