Plant Sale for Habitat Families

  • Blount County Agricultural Extension Office

Early this year, the BCMG Plant Sale Committee decided to have a special plant sale in the Fall just for Habitat folks.  The plant sale for Habitat folks will be held on October 19, 2019, from 10 a.m. until Noon at the Extension Office.  This plant sale will be very different from the Spring Plant Sale in that it will be more of a learning experience in addition to having plants available for purchase.  We will begin at 10 a.m. with three sequential 10-minute garden themed lectures.  Bob Hollmann will speak on lawn care; Maryann Gerber will speak on trees and shrubs; and Bob Hornyak will speak on small vegetable gardens.

How can you help?  We will need plants for the 25 Habitat families.  Factors to be considered are that most of their yards are small and have full sun.  We are recommending donations be limited to drought resistant plants.  Suggestions are small trees such as dogwood, redbud, crabapple, flowering cherry, lilac, flower peach, plum, etc., shrubs, perennial’s such as iris, day lilies, ornamental grasses; bulbs such as daffodil, tulip, etc.  We also would like to offer small gardening tools, such as water hoses, water cans, shovels, rakes, etc.  Since most of their plants will be small, large pruning tools would not be needed for a while.

Our schedule is to set up on Friday, October 18th beginning at Noon.  We will receive plants from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.  The State Inspector, Mary Glover, will inspect the plants between 4 and 5 p.m.; therefore, no plants will be accepted after 4 p.m.  You may also bring your garden tools between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

On October 19th at 10 a.m., we will welcome our Habitat families and begin with our educational lectures and conclude with shopping for plants and garden tools.  During this time, volunteers are needed to be escorts for each family as they shop.  We are asking them to bring a picture of their yard on their phone to enable our Master Gardener escorts to help them determine the best plants for their space.

Please be sure to label all your plants before you bring them to the Plant Sale on Friday, October 18th.  If you need plant labels, they are available on the website; go to BCMG Info, Documents, BCMG Documents, Labels for Your Plants Donated to the 2019 Spring Plant Sale.  I will also have some labels at our August and September membership meetings.

Sign-up sheets will be available at the August and September membership meetings.  We would like to offer our Habitat families a chance to learn more about gardening and Master Gardeners and feel this Fall Habitat Plant Sale will be an excellent opportunity to accomplish both.  Thank you for your support and I look forward to our October 19th Habitat Plant Sale!
